The Fine Art Gallery at Tallahassee Community College will host When the Sky Has No Corners, an exhibit by international award-winning figurative ceramic artist, Barbara Balzer. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 7, from 5 until 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public. The exhibit runs through October 12.
The daughter of a U.S. Air Force officer, Barbara traveled the world with her family. She attended the University of Iowa, earning both a B.A. and an M.A. in American Literature and European Literature and Thought, graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. She then earned a Juris Doctor at the Iowa School of Law before relocating to Tallahassee to clerk at the First District Court of Appeal. She then worked as a Staff Attorney in the Florida Senate Committee for Consumer Affairs. She raised a family and raced for Nike South to qualify for the first Women’s Olympic Marathon Trials, all while working and exploring with clay in the evenings and weekends. After her son left for college, she turned to art full-time, first earning an M.F.A. in Sculpture at FSU, then exhibiting both nationally and internationally, and attending art residencies in Europe and Asia. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Museo de Ceramica in Manises, Spain, the Yingge Museum of Ceramics in Taiwan, the Macon Museum of Art and Science in Georgia, and Vero Beach Center for the Arts in Florida.
The TCC Fine Art Gallery is located in the Fine and Performing Arts Center on TCC’s main campus. Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public on weekdays from 12:30 to 4:40 p.m. Parking on the campus of TCC is also free.
