Memory and Art Collide in ‘Underwriting,’ a New Exhibit at TSC Fine Art Gallery

February 12, 2025

The Tallahassee State College Fine Art Gallery proudly presents Underwriting, a thought-provoking exhibition by artist and educator Joshua Flores. The gallery will host an opening reception on Thursday, February 27, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Flores, an adjunct professor at TSC, played a pivotal role in reintroducing sculpture and digital photography courses to the college’s curriculum. As an accomplished printmaker and painter, his work delves into the delicate and fleeting nature of memory.

In Underwriting, Flores explores the fragility of recollection through intricate stencil monoprints and his works reflect his deep fascination with the function of memory. Using hand-cut paper stencils composed of abstract filigree patterns and networks of lines reminiscent of synaptic connections and a process of repeated printing, Flores creates unique compositions that evoke the concepts of overwriting and cognitive data loss. Each print captures the transformation, distortion, and eventual fading of memories, reflecting the way experiences are reshaped over time. His art serves as both a tribute to loved ones and a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of life.

"I mourn and celebrate memories of loved ones and the fleeting life we often take for granted," Flores explains. "I have long been fascinated by the function of memory and disconcerted by its fragility. My work seeks to capture the beauty and impermanence of recollection, much like the way memories blend, shift, and sometimes vanish altogether."

The exhibition will be open every Monday through Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m., from February 27 through March 21. Admission to the gallery and parking on TSC’s campus is free.
