Required Approvals for Research Involving Human Subjects
Students carrying out research studies that involve human subjects, and who wish to subsequently publish their results in any form, are required under College policy (po5200) to obtain approval from the TSC Institutional Review Board (IRB) before the study begins.
The Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Tallahassee State College is authorized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to assure that research carried out by TSC faculty, staff, and students is carried out in compliance with all applicable federal laws related to the protection of human subjects (45 CFR 46).
For the purposes of this policy, publication of results includes publication in the TSC Undergraduate Research Journal and/or presentation at the College’s annual Undergraduate Research Symposium. All students are encouraged to view the following video, which explains the purpose of IRBs in greater detail.
TSC IRB has created a streamlined process for the review of student research projects. Students wishing to submit projects for IRB review should click on the link below to complete a short initial intake form. Once completed, a review of projects is typically completed within 1 to 2 business days during the fall and spring semesters.
